.....ICYCLE 2012... Brrrr!... Will and Chris L raced their homemade studded tires at Dufferin Grove Rink on Saturday, Feb 18th at Icycle 2012, finishing a respectable 2nd and 3rd. This championship-style event boasted new categories for this year: tandem and 20"wheel.  The tandem race was arguably the most entertaining.     Surprisingly, there were even requests for a tall-bike category.

Black Fly Racing on podium Chris finishing the last lap for Black Fly Racing 2 It could have been a double podium for Black Fly Racing 1 and 2. Black Fly 2 had a mechanical which added 12min to their lap, but they worked hard to closed the gap to 4min at the end, earning 4th. We must remember to bring those Christmas lights next year!  Now that's outta the way, another great weekend I would assume?  Of course.  We had a fast, flowing course with none of those lung-busting killer climbs that Chico is known to include - which in turn made for some pretty quick lap times.  The 10 person team completed 25 laps, finished 16th out of 53 teams while our 4 person No-Nite laps

A rare opportunity yesterday for a few BlackFly riders to get together and ride through Durham. Despite getting poked in the eye with a branch (hence the squint) at the 1 k. mark and riding the rest of the 25 k. with only one eye, a great ride. HOLY SEIZING LEGS, BATMAN!!! I heard that one a few times after the race.   Another one was the near-perfect riding conditions. A couple of teams were entered this year and the team of JohnL, Adam, Cam, ChrisB, and Muller came in 3rd, just a few minutes ahead of the other Black Fly team of Drew, Tony, ChrisL, Will and Fox.  Ian, Stitt and Marty all finished in the top 100.  Too bad the BBQ

Hardwood Hills.  Well, it didn't rain!  I thought for sure we were gonna get dumped on but luckily it only drizzled for a few minutes.  It was hot, though.  With the humidity it was pushing 40 degrees in the first half of the day, making the many roots and rocks rather slippery.  This caused a couple of us to crash (see below photo).  For me, my crash came with less than 1km to go on my last lap

If you're ever in London, Ontario with your mountain bike, check out Boler Mountain for some riding. They don't have a lot of trails but they do have a challenging 9km loop that had everything you would want: steep hills, roots, rocks and some flow-eee sections.  For me it was quite nostalgic since the last time I rode my bike here it was an O-Cup race and I was 17 years old!

Mansfield. After an excellent ride a couple of weeks ago in Waterloo at the Hydro Cut, Muller and I tried to squeeze in a loop before the weather was to turn sour on Saturday morning. The squeeze was too tight and we had to abort the mission only a few km in. Last summer's road ride adventure with Stitt was still fresh in our memories. The "cut" will have to wait for another day!

It looks like Drew, Ian and our old friend Derrick enjoyed a day of racing up at Mansfield yesterday. Since the Icebreaker was canceled this year, this "Homage to Ice" could become Ontario's new opening event. Haven't seen any results yet but I'm sure both the lads were shredding the course. We'll be up there next month doing some shredding of our own for the Spring 8hrs!

Bootleg Canyon, Boulder City, Nevada. Basically there was a gravel road up the middle of these 2 gigantic hills with singletrack carved into their sides. Very "flow-ee" but also very technical with extremely loose dirt and numerous boulders and rocks to pick through. Upon closer inspection it was revealed that the bike I had lined up for the 24hrs had a couple of cracks in the BB area. Don't worry, no panic. Tonight's Don ride with Muller, Fox, Tony and Marty took us from downtown T.O. into the "Upper Don" up to Sunnybrook and back down through the "Lower Don". All told, about 30kms of riding and of that, 15-20 km's of dirt. All in the middle of 5 million people. We even bumped into Denis "Wild" Thang, who was out for a post-work training ride. Giver!
